Klimaat, Natuur & Milieu
prof. dr. Joyeeta Gupta
Sharing Our Earth with a focus on Climate Change
Our planet has given us clean air, clean water, a stable climate and rich biodiversity. Nature is constantly working to clean the air and water and provide us with food. However, we humans have taken resources from the Earth and dumped waste on it. In doing so, we have caused significant damage to other people, communities and countries, and to other living beings and ecosystems - we have made the planet unhealthy. People are dying from polluted air and water. Chemicals are destroying the pollinators that make our flowers bloom and help produce food. Climate is becoming unpredictable. We have exceeded the 'safe and just' limits of the Earth. We have satisfied the greed of some, but not yet the needs of all. We are at a tipping point where the Earth's systems may become unstable and unable to support human life. We need to press the reset button. We need a better system of governance, we need a global constitution that includes nature, biodiversity and human rights. And that's exactly what our speaker tonight is going to be arguing!
We are thrilled to welcome prof. dr. Joyeeta Gupta, who will share her fascinating perspective on the world and international relations. The inspiring Joyeeta Gupta was born in India, studied economics and law in India, studied international law at Harvard Law School, worked with Ralph Nader, then for an NGO in the Netherlands on stopping the cross-border movement of hazardous waste, fell in love in the Netherlands and stayed here! She then had the great opportunity to work as an advisor at the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment on climate change. In 1993, she moved to VU University to complete her PhD research. She was a professor of water law and policy at Delft; climate change law and policy at VU; and environment and development at UVA – an impressive and diverse range of expertise! Together with other IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) authors and Al Gore, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and the Spinoza Prize – the highest scientific award in the Netherlands – in 2023! This incredible prize was the driving force behind her decision to work on a global constitution.
