Richard Denton

The price of golf

The world of golf is undergoing significant changes influenced by economic (e.g. emergence of LIV), social (e.g. inclusion and diversity), and technological (e.g. equipment, performance tracking) factors. Golf has meanwhile made it back to the Olympics after 112 years and the top 100 players are among the best earning top sporters in the world. Richard Denton will discuss with us where the funds are coming from to make this all happen, where the money is spent and who benefits the most. He will review key developments in the global golf industry over the past decades and share his insights into what we can expect in the near future.

Richard Denton has worked in the sport marketing business for 35 years with brands, agencies and rights holders. As Manager of Sponsoring and PR for Canon Europa, Richard developed and executed sport marketing programs around the UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Cup, Canon Williams F1 Team, Wimbledon, Roland Garros, the Ryder Cup, PGA European Tour golf, Natal Sharks Rugby and European Athletics across 35 markets in the EMEA region. He then moved on to become International Vice President at IMG Consulting Europe and managing director at Trefpunt Sports and Entertainment.

In 2012 Richard started sharing his knowledge and experience as a lecturer with the Johan Cruyff Institute for Sport Studies in Amsterdam and Barcelona. Since 2019 Richard is the Academic Director for the Master in Sport Management in Amsterdam and also lectures for numerous universities and institutes. In 2015 he started working as an independent Consultant. Richard is also an avid golfer (handicap 9.4) and visits the gym regularly to keep fit as well as attending as much live sport as possible.
