Noriko Amano - Mina Hayakawa

Japanese Kōdō workshop: a scent-based experience

Together with Sado (the tea ceremony) and Kado (ikebana flower arranging), the exploration of scents in the Kōdō ceremony is one of Japan's most refined and esteemed traditional arts. The Kōdō (香道) ceremony, known as the 'Way of Fragrance', is a traditional Japanese art form that involves the appreciation and evaluation of aromatic wood. The tradition originated as early as the sixth century, after incense woods entered Japan from the Asian mainland in the wake of Buddhism. This unique workshop immerses participants in the centuries-old Japanese practice of recognizing and experiencing aromas. An evening not to be missed!

Under the guidance of Mina Hayakawa, a Kōdō sensei from Kyoto, attendees will refine their senses by experiencing 'smoky', 'light', 'sweet', or 'warm' scents, which are then translated into colors and shapes. Mina Hayakawa has been practicing Kōdō since the age of 18 and established her own studio in 2002. By request of the lecturer, please don't use parfum or any other strong fragrances. Noriko Amano van Baaren will be the translator from Japanese to English this evening.
