The surprising resilience of Russia's influence in Central Asia

Almost thirty years after the Soviet collapse, Russia still retains significant influence in Central Asia. This lecture will focus on the cultural, economic, and security factors that help Moscow maintain its influence in the region. Despite the emergence of China as the single most important economic actor in Central Asia, Russia still retains significant influence in the region. Most studies on Russia's influence in Central Asia tend to focus on the formal aspects of the relationship, including regional organizations like the CSTO or the Eurasian Union; or, conversely, the visible aspects of Russian influence, such as the presence or absence of the Russian language. There is a consensus that Russian influence is declining. While I agree with this assessment in general, my observations lead me to conclude that in many ways Russian influence remains surprisingly strong and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
