Polysemia

A private concert by Polysemia

'Polysemía' is an ensemble created in 2022 by Gaia Szames, voice, together with Alexander Baker*, Adriana Méndez, Giuseppe Ciraso-Calì and Magdalena Kasprzyk-Dobija in the viola da gamba. (*not present)

Their main focus is the art of the madrigal form and other polyphonic compositions such as motets, spanning from the beginning to the culmination of this musical genre. Currently, they are concentrating on the first madrigal composers during the Renaissance period, starting with J. Arcadelt and continuing with C. de Rore.

Their primary focus is on the text and the multiple layers that poetry employs for the expression of meaning, with the function of each voice and the musical development being guided by historical reconstructions. Thanks to the versatility of this formation they can work on madrigals for 3, 4 and 5 voices, using both voices and solo instrumental pieces, and making use of diminutions based on the techniques of this period. This allows them to explore different compositional techniques and how each composer decides to use various.

Gaia Szames is an Argentinean soprano specialized on Early Music, based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Her main focus is the Italian and French music from the 16th and 17th centuries, although her artistic interest and versatility often leads her to participate in projects ranging from the early medieval repertory, mainly focusing on renaissance and early baroque music and sometimes contemporary music.

Gaia is also a member of [H]Éros Ensemble, where she sings as a soloist 17th century French music. She is a founder of Auræ together with the recorder player Mathilde Aigouy and a founder of Polysemía, her own ensemble devoted to the madrigal form from the renaissance and early baroque periods, where her passion towards the madrigals is fulfilled.
