Tourists in Air and Space: Is the Sky the Limit?
This talk will consider air space and outer space: where the one ends and the other begins; what are the foundations of Air and Space Law; and what's on the horizon. So as to stimulate discussion, the talk will explore four common themes in the field: players, competition, the environment, and geopolitics.
We may take air travel a little for granted today, though it was exclusively a State activity in earlier times. In Space, until recently there were only State actors, but we now see private actors: manufacturers, launch providers and spacecraft operators. The new space race is a 'billionaire' space race, in the private sector. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson have become household names. There are signs of new markets emerging, including for 'space tourism', which just years ago such an idea might have been considered science fiction. As a whole new chapter for Space unfolds, this talk will consider air space and outer space: where the one ends and the other begins; what are the foundations of Air and Space Law; and what's on the horizon. So as to stimulate discussion, the talk will explore four common themes in the field: players, competition, the environment, and geopolitics.
